In 2020, we spent a lot of time at home and it looks like 2021 will be more of the same. So my question is why not make your home the most luxurious, welcoming place possible for yourself? If you ask me, that starts in the bathroom. It’s the first room you use every day and the only place you can get a moment of privacy anymore.

And because we’re spending so much time at home, the 2021 bathroom design trends I’m seeing all incorporate elements of luxury. Think rich colors, tons of texture, or spa-like elements that make your bathroom feel like a joy instead of a necessity.

2021 Bathroom Design Trends

These 2021 bathroom design trends are sure to inspire your next renovation or redecoration and bring a much-needed spot of luxury to your days. Like I said, we’re spending so much time at home — you deserve to make home feel really good!

Wood and Other Sustainable Materials

A big bathroom design trend I’m seeing for 2021 is adding wood and other natural, sustainable materials to your design. The application of these materials can range from large to small. Large as in cabinets and countertops; small as in soap dishes and other furnishings.

I recently saw a live edge vanity and knew I’d have to include it in a bathroom design soon. Vanities and countertops that have a natural element feel fresh and spa-like, especially when combined with other sustainable accents like marble, bamboo, and cork.

Another way to incorporate sustainable materials into your bathroom design is by including plants. Plants purify the air and add a much-needed touch of life in the bathroom. Most house plants are tropical, so they love the humidity from the shower and thrive in the bathroom!

Marble

Speaking of natural materials, marble is having a moment in 2021 bathroom design trends. Well, who am I kidding? Marble never really abdicated its throne. It always looks great in a bathroom! And with its wide variety of colors, markings, and veining, you can find marble that suits your style.

Marble is like the LBD of design. It looks fabulous with anything it’s paired with. Dark marble is dramatic and looks stunning with gold fixtures (more on gold later). Light marble also looks great with gold fixtures. You can let the marble be the highlight of the room when you focus on scale or unique colors or you can let it be a supporting player if you choose to let your fixtures or other tile take center stage.

Bottom line? Marble is high on the list of 2021 bathroom design trends for good reason! It’s a classic stone that was made to be in an elegant, luxurious bathroom.

Tile of all Sorts

In a bathroom, there are plenty of places to use tile! From your shower stall to your floor to your walls, 2021 bathroom design trends say that tile everything is big!

Patterned Tiles

When I think of patterned tile, I think of tile that has a pattern painted right on or baked into the glaze. Use these patterned tiles in your shower or tub to feature that area and make your morning shower feel luxurious. You could also use a tile that has a pattern created out of a texture, like a tile that mimics wood-grain, on the floor.

Unique Tile Shapes and Sizes

Small tiles can be classic or modern depending on how you arrange them. When it comes to 2021 bathroom design trends, I’ve seen them used both ways.

If you’re interested in a contemporary feel, take advantage of their size and create a gorgeous piece of artwork on your floor. Stripes, herringbone, or chevron would fit that bill and is a unique way to make an on-trend statement in your bathroom.

Should you prefer a classic pattern, you could also use small tiles to create a traditional hexagonal or diamond pattern. This simple look is elegant and always on trend, especially now in 2021.

Terrazzo Tile

We think of Terrazzo tile on the counter top, but what about your shower stall outfitted with terrazzo? It makes a big splash (no pun intended) if you use a monochromatic color scheme and match your terrazzo to the paint and other accents in your bathroom.

Gold Metals

Like marble, gold is not going anywhere. And also like marble, gold can be used in just about every application in the bathroom. Hardware is a natural place to add gold into your bathroom, but what about in your furnishings and other design elements?

When it comes to storage, gold is a major player in 2021 bathroom design trends. I’ve seen a lot of clear acrylic accented with gold, from storage boxes to etageres designed to fit into small bathroom spaces. As a bonus, this type of storage doesn’t have to be hidden — in fact, it’s designed to stand out, which is great news if you don’t have a lot of cabinet space!

Spa-Like, Seamless Transitions

Is there anything more spa-like than a walk-in shower? This open-concept trend allows you to remove shower curtains and other things that add to visual and physical clutter so you’re left with a tranquil, soothing space. With this clean, seamless look, you’ll also see nooks incorporated into the shower stall itself and minimalistic, streamlined fixtures that save space.

Elle Decor

This 2021 bathroom design trend is fantastic for so many reasons. One, it encourages flow and movement. movement. Two, it removes the tubs so it’s friendly for those of us who have a hard time climbing over that edge!

Texture

Whenever you can add texture, 2021 bathroom design trends have done it! Cabinets, tiles, countertops… you name it. I’ve seen unique vanities (like the live edge vanity I showed you above) and countertops that incorporate texture. Texture is an important design element and goes a long way to making your space feel spa-like.

Let’s not forget wallpaper, too. Wallpaper is great in a bathroom because it’s an easy way to add texture to your space. When you incorporate gold into the pattern or just go all in with gold wallpaper, you’ll be adding a luxe touch and a much needed pop of texture, even if it’s a smaller room.

2021 Bathroom Color Trends: Green

Color psychology tells us that we associate green with health, vitality, and relaxation — things that we will all want in 2021! So it’s no surprise that Aegean Teal is Benjamin Moore’s 2021 Color of the Year! This deep mix of blue and green feels rich and luxurious and is right at home in a bathroom. Use it on your walls, in your tile, or incorporated into your towels and other furnishings.

If you want a classic green in your bathroom, I love the look of bright green tiles mixed with gold (no surprise there) or brass fixtures. Another way to incorporate green is by adding in those houseplants I mentioned!

Luxe Lighting

For so long, bathroom lighting has felt like an afterthought while other areas of the home had so many lighting choices. No more! 2021 bathroom design trends are showing luxe lighting in a bathroom and I am here for it! Chandeliers? Yes, please. Sconces next to the mirror? Of course. Mood lighting in the shower? Call me a prune because I’m never getting out!

Smart Home Capabilities

It is 2021, after all. From mirrors with built in TV displays and app selections to waterproof speakers to digitally-controlled shower heads, there is so much tech in 2021 bathroom design trends! Not all of these are frivolous, either. The smart home capabilities that are added into bathrooms can control water temperature, water flow and usage, and lighting as well as ot minded elements.

Electric Mirror

If 2021 is going to be another year spent at home, why not make home as luxurious as possible? That was definitely the keyword at the top of everyone’s mind as 2021 bathroom design trends go and I think you can see that based on this trend report. What bathroom design trend are you going to incorporate into your home?
