A few weeks ago we talked about the kitchen table – how central it is to our lives and livelihood. The kitchen table suggests a sense of busyness – sometimes an urgent frenzy with a fast and energetic pace that accompanies dinner conversation and the clattering of pots and pans. A kitchen nook, however, conveys a tone that is much more tranquil and relaxing. This small space is more intimate, cozier, more comforting.
These nooks, usually smaller in area, are often tucked away in corners, sometimes surrounded by windows and sunlight – a perfect start to any day. A peaceful way to start the day’s journey. A slow, warm bowl of oatmeal, cup of coffee and the morning paper or perhaps soft boiled eggs and “soldiers” for the children to fuel their school day, along with a discussion of the day’s agenda.
And then, when the children and spouses are done and have gone for the day, it’s a place to sit for a moment of respite with a hot cappuccino and perhaps a biscotti or two (Shhhh!) before chores, jobs and everyday demands resume.
The breakfast nook is the perfect place to invite a friend over for an afternoon cup of tea and perhaps a nice slice of cake, or a scone – or even a glass of wine as the day draws to a close…
