It is the season when food takes center stage at holiday gatherings and you hear the groans of stuffed loved ones coupled with regrets of all the things that go into our mouths and then straight to our hips. I, for one, think this is the time of year to really enjoy the goodies and treats that are only made and shared this time of year such as fruitcake. Yes, I did say fruitcake, though I am highly particular and only eat the fruitcake I make that is chocked full of nuts and dried fruit that there is barely any cake to it. Fruitcake aside, I want calorie laden morsels of goodness like powdered sugar sand tarts, chocolate truffles, cheese straws, fudge and the list goes on and on. We are all so hard on ourselves, berating our souls for these joys that are tied to memories from the past as well the loved ones who made them. I was watching the news the other morning as they were about to introduce the next segment on, “Light Holiday Meals”. I don’t want a light holiday meal! To everything there is a season…this is the time to take pleasure in the tastes of your traditions and not feel so guilty for a little splurge here and there. Today, I hope you are motivated not to feel guilty if you pick-up a cranberry scone as you grab some Starbucks coffee or if a cookie happens to land in your mouth as you are packing some to share at work. Delight in the flavors of the season because New Year’s is right around the corner and everybody knows that when you diet! Happiest of Mondays.
