The breathtaking view of the Trancoso, Brazil waterfront surrounded by tropical wildlife is “the best piece of art” in his family’s vacation home, said designer Robert Novogratz. He and his wife, Cortney, transformed a ramshackle dwelling to a sanctuary in paradise for their friends and family, including their seven children.
The result of that transformation by the design duo well known from their reality TV shows and home decor lines is the subject of BEACHSIDE BOHEMIAN by Robert and Cortney Novogratz, Rizzoli New York, 2016.
The waterfront dining and living area is “the most used space in the home because of the beautiful view,” Robert said.
By effortlessly combining their signature, personality-driven bohemian chic style with practical and comfortable living elements, the couple sought to create a “boutique hotel experience in our vacation home,” Robert told Hadley Court. “When people go on vacation, they want that feeling of a faraway place,” he said. “Cortney and I design a lot of boutique hotels. We strove to create that same experience here.”
“For instance, we gave the bath a spa-like feeling with the linens and soaps and shampoos and using all white. In a vacation home, you don’t want a ton of personal things. Instead, you use one-of-a-kind art pieces, beautiful table-top books, beautiful gameboards and other boutique touches to create a sanctuary.”
Comfort–both practically and emotionally– is also a big part of creating a sanctuary, Robert added. Perhaps the most iconic touch of comfort in their Brazil vacation home is “The Ultimate Lounger.”
Custom-made and handcrafted to the Novogratz’ specifications, the ultimate cocoon is part swing, part hammock, part sofa and part bed. “If we have guests and run out of beds, that is one place the guests can sleep. And its a place where we can all pile in at night and watch movies, one of our favorite things to do as a family.”
Robert and Cortney Novogratz , both native Southerners, met at a party over twenty years ago. After realizing they had a knack for renovating derelict properties into coveted, gorgeous homes, they put their talents to use full-time and founded The Novogratz design firm, with numerous luxury projects for private residences, restaurants, hotels and resorts, as well as product lines for retailers like Macy’s, CB2 and Bed Bath & Beyond.
In their Brazil vacation home, special attention is given to the outdoor spaces, including the ultimate treehouse. Complete with airconditioning and a big-screen TV, the treehouse serves as both a retreat-within-a-retreat for the family and as a coveted guest house.

The outdoor bar and lounge area feels like a laid-back but luxurious resort.
Robert describes the couple’s signature Bohemian chic style as “fun, casual, lively and fashion-driven with pops of color.” He sees the Bohemian look having an impact in the luxury market today, particularly in textiles. “Bohemian is an international look that has now trended into cities and regions, such as Portland, New York, Los Angeles and Austin. It is an appealing look to Millennials, especially in their apparel,” he said.
The site of their family vacation home, Transcoso, Brazil, is fast becoming one of the most popular beach destinations in the world, with celebrities and others flocking there to take in the seaside town’s exotic charm and beauty.
The home the Novogratz couple has created there together is like their personal slice of heaven.
