Hi Hadley Court readers, this is Jessica, Leslie Hendrix Wood’s guest contributor and, today I would like to talk about iPad recipe apps that save you time in the kitchen!
As a writer I’m a book lover. I love all books. I love the way the paper feels in my hands and I love the way the pages sound when you flip them. As a foodie I love cookbooks. They’re pieces of visual inspiration to me. Nothing will ever take away from the beauty and the power of a cookbook like these 3 from publisher, Rizzoli, that came out in the fall of last year. I especially enjoyed Annette Joseph’s cookbook, Picture Perfect Parties that I wrote about, here. If you haven’t seen it, make sure to get a copy. It’s beautiful. Annette styles many of the homes you see each month in Better Homes and Gardens magazine and is a frequent guest on the Today Show.
However, modern times and modern schedules and modern practices sometimes call for modern appliances… or modern apps – iPad apps as opposed to the shortened word for appetizer, though as you will soon see there is a time saving app for that too! The following kitchen apps will help you plan meals, make and organize your grocery lists and offer helpful tools and techniques to make your time at the chopping block faster and more efficient. And even though some of you may not need { or like } to cook with apps, our foodie children do….and will be cooking that way even more in the future { see the end of this post for a preview of that! }
My favorite food website, Food52, also has an app with the same name.The Food52 Holiday app is fantastic for planning your holiday meals or even big parties. This app provides recipes, suggestions and functions as a planning guide as well. Simply select the meals you’d like to prepare for and plan your holidays and large parties ahead of time. You will find recipes for Valentine’s Day, and with Easter and Passover practically around the corner, and, a 3 day weekend for the Fourth of July this year {!} and later, Thankskgiving and Christmas, you may want to bookmark this post! The recipes Food52 offers come with video instructions for many of them. I love knowing just how to put the thermometer in my turkey, don’t you?
{ And, if you’re looking for Valentines Day entertaining inspiration while researching recipes on Food 52, make sure to see my fellow guest post contributor, Lynda Quintero David’s beautiful new Pinterest board for Leslie, CELEBRATING LOVE, by clicking here. }
Those who love New York Times food columnist and How to Cook Everything’s Mark Bittman will love his How to Cook Everything App! Unlike many of the major recipe search engines out there that collect from many different sources, How to Cook Everything’s recipes all come from one place and he shares his tips and tricks to help you along. There is a basic and vegetarian version of this app as well. Bittman shares various techniques that help and save time in the kitchen as well.
Martha Stewart fans will enjoy the Everyday Food App. Here you will have access to a library of recipes from the Everyday Food magazine. You can get a daily dinner suggestion, or browse the recipe collection by category, main ingredients, etc. Nutritional information and quick tips are also included. This app links to Ziplist.com, a free recipe/shopping service that allows for easy multi-recipe shopping list creation as well as recipe sharing and saving. Recipes can also be saved from other sources. I also like this app’s Recipe Shuffle feature, which gives you ideas for a whole meal and then lets you shake it up for new ones. Leave it to Martha!
Harvest is an app designed to help those wanting to buy locally-grown food. With this app you will become a locavore in no time at all. Harvest helps you identify local sources of fresh food, from weekly farmers markets to farm stands. Harvest also serves as a great planning tool, giving you information on what produce is in season locally, where to find it, and how to properly store it.
There are many ways to store your iPad for use in the kitchen. Belkin makes a device that comes with a wand and a stylus so that your messy hands never have to touch your actual iPad. I actually prefer to use my lucite cookbook holder as a stand, though. Both are available at Amazon. For more ideas, click here to visit Babble where you can see 7 different ipad stands for your kitchen.
And,now, for a preview of how we’ll be cooking with apps in the future -and for my friends at the Kitchen and Bath Show in Las Vegas now, #KBIS2014, Whirlpool Appliances debuted this interactive cooktop at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas a few weeks earlier. This is how we, and our children, will be able to cook in the near future. We won’t need our IPads in the kitchen, these apps will be built into our appliances!
Click here to watch this fantastic video demonstration from Whirlpool. I was amazed to see it already had 302, 500 + views.
Do you have any other favorite apps for recipes that I haven’t mentioned here? Please share them in the comments. I have 3 children at home, Leslie has two, and we’re always looking for new recipe apps that are easy to use and save us time.
