How do you create big moments in your home so that rooms transcend the ordinary and become deeply personal? It’s all in the little things: the stylish and thoughtfully edited touches that create sophisticated and memorable interiors.
“It’s the Little Things: Creating Big Moments in Your Home Through the Stylish Small Stuff” is author, designer and editor Susanna Salk’s latest book, by Rizzoli-New York and set to hit bookstores March 15.
Susanna, shown above in her own kitchen with her rescue dog Molly, felt the need for writing “It’s the Little Things” from her years of experience as a style setter and designer. Her career includes helping to launch Elle Décor and being an editor at House and Garden, as well as authoring several best-selling books, such as Decorate Fearlessly and Room for Children: Stylish Spaces for Sleep and Play. “Over the years, the rooms I’ve seen that I’ve loved the most and that truly resonated long after I have left them have been the ones articulated with details. I wanted to celebrate all the ways this is played out in some of the world’s most beautiful rooms by the designers who inspire me,” she told Hadley Court.
The little touches, she believes, make home deeply personal and artful. “As long as each tells a story and they are thoughtfully edited, details give a room its soul,” she said.
The setting above, one of many in her new book, is one of her favorites. “A simple entry hall is given personality from top to bottom,” she said. “It’s the different heights and textures and colors that make this all work. It exudes a strong sense of editing as much as bringing in detail.”
The bedroom setting above is “a stellar example of how we can use every opportunity to create a rich and personal landscape,” Susanna said. “So often people think bedrooms must be serene, but I would argue that this patterned and monogrammed bed would induce dreams as sweet as in any bedroom.”
As for the boldly eclectic kitchen setting above, Susanna said, “Details work best when they sometimes are in unexpected places, such as this dramatic dining room-worthy chandelier and bench in the kitchen eating area.”
When asked about one of her favorite visual landscapes in her own home, she quickly cited “my little wall of book shelves with its patterned window seat between them.”
“I painted the shelves’ backs a yellow to contrast with the white outside trim. With only my favorite design books stacked in front, the effect feels richly layered and intriguing, like its own mini library.”
