Mastering Symmetry

symmetry

I am considering redesigning many rooms in my home. The rooms in my home are large and the ceilings are high. One tried and true design principle is to use symmetry to anchor a large room. I love the over sized lanterns in the photo above. The lanterns add scale as well as symmetry. Generous proportions and repetitive details create drama.  I have never been one to like everything matchy-matchy, however, symmetry can be tastefully edited to add balance to a large room. Strive for harmony and balance with pairs of things-vases, sconces, chairs-then throw something offbeat to keep things from looking too stiff. You don’t always need twins to create a sense of balance. Items similar is shape and scale can create symmetry as well. In choosing pieces for symmetrical design, be sure to use accent pieces such as pillows and sconces which are commensurate in scale with upholstered pieces.

symmetry2 I love how every item is symmetrical in the photo above, however the accents on the mantle are a little off kilter.

Symmetry is definitely at play in this room. I love how the geometric pillow on the sofa adds a relief from the symmetry. Its all about ruthless editing.
