Fanciful flora

Who doesn’t love flowers?! I much prefer receiving a lovely bouquet of flowers over almost anything… except for maybe a nice bottle of wine and chocolate! Flowers bring an instant smile. They’re the perfect way to freshen up your living space. They can be used as an accessory for added texture and color, and let’s not forget how wonderfully fragrant many are. There really is nothing quite like walking into a room with a lovely bouquet of flowers. They become the instant centerpiece – our eyes are drawn to them immediately. Why wait for someone to give you flowers? I don’t! Freshly cut flowers have become a must for me. I can assure you that a lovely flower arrangement will not and need not break the bank. I build in “flower money” into my week’s budget – that’s how important they are to me.

I love to pick fresh flowers and I do so when I am able. I do not have a fancy or formal garden, but I do have a few lovely flowering bushes by my house. I love to arrange the lilacs, rhododendron, and the roses that I can clip on my own. I simply cannot wait for my hydrangea to bloom for they will be in every room of my home! When my children were young they loved to pick wild flowers. I used to arrange them in small vases, even leftover glass jars, and I would place them either by the kitchen sink or on one of the bathroom sinks.

You also needn’t have fancy vases. Sometimes you’ll want to bring out the cut crystal vase or the antique blue and white porcelain chinoiserie vase, but flowers can look just as lovely in decanters, glass pitchers, wine bottles even upcycled mason and jam jars! If you can’t cut your own fresh flowers, blooming or fully bloomed branches placed in tall jars also look lovely. When I don’t have the ability to cut my own flowers, sometimes I go to my local florist, but I have found that my grocery store and Trader Joe’s have a fabulous selection of flowers as well. I find that a simple, white jar of white tulips just looks so elegant on a mantel, coffee table or a piano. And fresh flowers by my bedside table make me so happy. Lilies give off the most wonderful aroma. Gerbera daisies and Ranunculus can add the perfect touch of color to your space. Your flowers can be as formal or as rustic as you’d like.

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some flowers. You will thank me, I promise!

I love having fresh flowers in my home – it’s an instant “pick me up”. Fortunately, my roses are beautiful right now making it really easy. Happy weekend!
