My recent fascination with Chinoiserie continues. Chinoiserie was a term which originated in France and refers to Chinese influence in European furniture designs, evident in furniture design as far back as the 17th century. Chinoiserie peaked in popularity during the middle of the 18th century. Lacquers and gold leaf were used with a combination of western and eastern motifs. Many of the great monarchs. such as Louis XV and Marie Antoinette were know to have a fascination with Chinoiserie as well.
In the 18th century, visiting the mysterious far east was available only to the wealthiest individuals via the “Silk Road” trade route. In order to keep up with a growing demand for oriental art and furniture, European artisans developed the Chinoiserie design, which introduced a taste of an exciting and sophisticated foreign Asian culture to Europe.
These Chinoiserie secretaires would be a fabulous focal point in any room. I adore how, even today, Chinoiserie adds a hint of mystery and intrigue to any room.
