I must admit that I have never been a huge fan of Chinoiserie. Chinoiserie is fanciful European interpretations of Chinese styles in the design of interiors, furniture, pottery, textiles, and gardens. The style features lavish gilding and lacquering, asymmetrical forms, unorthodox perspective, and Asian motifs.
In recent months I have grown fond of Chinoiserie styled furnishings. I love Chinoiserie furnishings in bright colored lacquer. They can add a pop of color to any room and instant sophistication. Last semester, one of the classes I took was the History of Interior Design. In the class, I learned how much Asia inspired Europe in the 17th and 18th century and how infatuated the Europeans were with all things Asian. So many styles, from Chippendale to Danish Modern, have been influenced by Asia. Chinoiserie has proven itself to be a style which endures the test of time.
