stay·ca·tion /stāˈkāSHn/
- a vacation spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.
Repeat after me: stay-ca-tion. During the work week we think about it, at night we may even dream about it, vacations have a way of becoming more and more desirable especially while managing a hectic work/life balance. But is it always possible?
For those MUCH needed r&r sessions that don’t require a boarding pass to enjoy, make the best of your next weekend by turning your home into a little staycation with these seven easy steps!
Set the Date
As silly as it may sound, this truly is the first big step towards your next staycation. Planning is everything and if you can plan for chaos at work, why not pencil in some “me” time? Set a date in the near future (no more than 3 weeks ahead) and set a reminder as it gets closer to it so you don’t forget!
Bed & Breakfast
Let’s be real, on these glorious days of staying home, getting out of bed will be one of the hardest tasks of the day (and it should be the only one!) But maybe you don’t have to…. with an adorable little bed tray from Pottery Barn (or the like) enjoy breakfast in bed. Now let’s see if there’s an app out there to bring you a personal chef – but for now – the kids or the significant other will do!
An App That Cleans Your House!
Ok, so the app itself doesn’t EXACTLY clean your house, BUT this phenomenal little app has worked WONDERS for me in the past. Handy.com is the online service for booking trusted, local individuals who leave your space sparkling! Downloadable on any smartphone, this lifesaver is a must during your staycation!
If you’d like to keep to yourself (and perfectly understandable) the iROBOT Vacuum is your new best friend! See what wonders this little gadget can do for your home!
Set the Mood
Music is therapy. The way that certain wall colors create a soothing feeling, the right soundtrack can help keep the mind in a tranquil mindset. Music is a non-verbal, creative, structural, and emotional entity that transports one to the perfect place. Tune into Itunes and see everything from the classics to today’s music all in one place!
DIY Massage
Now that the house is clean, your favorite record is playing, and you’re looking for an activity to do – let’s focus again on you. Massages. You could have an on-call masseuse come over, or you can practice this exercise that will relieve some of that tension on your back and all you need is a yoga mat and a few tennis balls! As read on The Real Simple, spread the tennis balls and rest roll back and forth where you need it! (Click on link for precautions etc.)
Home Spa
Legend has it that queens would have servants fill their bath water with all kinds of exotic plants – sourced from all over – to preserve their skin. Live like a queen (or king) in your bathtub by filling up with natural oils from honey, coconut oil, and rose petals; it’s moisturizing heaven with things already in your home!
Turn the Page
It’s been proven that readers a) make better writers and b) are better sleepers. Sinking into a good book will relax the mind, and transition you into a state of serenity. Pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read but haven’t had the time to! My personal favorite, Swans: Legends of The Jet Society by Assouline, is a must! There’s something about the elegance with these NY society ladies that enthralls me. The glamour, the entertainment, not to mention that the book is a perfect styling element for a coffee table!
All this talk of staycation has even inspired me to plan one this instant! Enjoy the read every one!
