I just had my first experience in dorm room design. I moved my daughter into her first dorm room last week. Designing a dorm room has its challenges. Take a look of the dorm room before we started!
As you can see, I had my work cut out for me. The challenge with a dorm room is that you don’t want to break the bank decorating a room that your child will only live in for 9 months. My first stop was my dear friends fabric shop, Graham Kracker. She carries beautiful fabrics and makes custom bedding. My daughter and her room mate chose the darling fabrics pictured above. We also purchased a white matelassé bedspread and dust ruffle from Graham Kracker.
My favorite online shopping site for discounted home décor is Overstock.com.
I purchased the white “pleather” headboards for $139 each. What a bargain. The indoor outdoor rug is also from Overstock as are the drapery panels, which were $49 each. I couldn’t have bought the fabric for that. My friend at Graham Kracker added a navy blue trim to the edge and sewed the 2 panels together. They look like custom draperies now. I found the darling lamps at Target.
Are you ready for the big REVEAL?
I was really happy with the outcome – especially the monogram with my daughter’s initials. Do you love monograms as much as I do?
As a luxury decorator in Midland, Texas I don’t normally practice *design on a dime* but it was fun to do it this way for my daughter’s dorm room so she feels free to change things out as time goes on as she further develops her own style preferences.
Decorating a dorm room is challenging, but not as challenging as leaving your first child at college. What a truly bittersweet experience. When I have a sad moment, I look at these two pictures of my daughter – one in her new dorm room and one of her from last year making the UT Austin Longhorn’s famous *Hook Em* sign.
Yes, the dorm room is beautiful, but the real beauty lies in the independent and smart young woman my daughter has grown to be.
